Objectives: Hearing loss can lead to a number of disabilities and can reduce quality of life. Generally, the hearing thresholds of adolescents is better than adults or eldery. But, Occasionally, adolescents have hearing losses because of various factor. We aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing loss in the Korean population and factor for hearing threshold. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from KNHANES from 2010 through 2012. We included a total of 1,507 participants aged from 13 to 18 years. The frequencies tested were 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 KHz and investigated the hearing loss prevalence and factor for hearing threshold. Result:The prevalence of hearing loss in Korean adolescents was 3.7% ( PTA of frequencies at 0.5, 1, 2, and 3K ¡Ã 25dB). But, Average threshold at 6 KHz was significantly higher than at other frequencies. Hearing threshold ¡Ã 20dB at 6 KHz was observed in 27% of adolescents. Noise exposure in other than workplace ( ex, vehicle, machine noise and loud music sound) was related significantly to hearing threshold at 6 KHz. Conclusion:The prevalence of hearing loss in Korean adolescents was 3.7% using general standards of hearing loss. But, Increase of hearing threshold at 6 KHz was observed in Korean adolescents. We think that threshold ¡Ã 20dB at 6 KHz may be considered the early indicator of noise-induced hearing loss in adolescents.
