Objectives: Facial nerve paralysis causes not only the functional discomfort but also emotional discomfort and all together, it negatively affects the patient¡¯s quality of life. If the facial nerve paralysis became chronic, it leads to synkinesis, muscle atrophy and so many other facial disability although its degree of severity could be various. We wonder that the degree of facial disability has relationship with the quality of life to treat facial nerve paralysis patient more adequately. Methods:From 2015 February to 2015 August, total 49 chronic facial nerve paralysis patients answered the questionnaire of facial disability index(FDI) and SF-36. We categorize by two groups, one has higher FDI score than average FDI score and the other has lower FDI score than average FDI score. Then we analyze FDI score and SF-36 score of each group. Result:There was no meaningful difference of quality of life between two groups. Total functional FDI average score was 19.46 ¡¾ 4.19. The higher FDI score group had 15.63 ¡¾ 3.00 FDI-score and 111.82 ¡¾ 23.54 SF-36 score and the lower FDI group had 22.59 ¡¾ 1.60 FDI score and 120.37 ¡¾ 19.85 SF-36 score. The p-value of the two group¡¯s average SF-36 score was 0.10 which means they feel similar stress regardless of the severity of facial nerve paralysis. Conclusion:Facial nerve paralysis is a disaster to the patient. It is a shock whether the symptom is light or heavy. Although patients showed light facial nerve paralysis symptoms, they got similar level of stress with patients who suffered from heavier symptoms. We should understand how they feel to treat well. When treating facial nerve paralysis patients, doctor should notice their situation regardless of the severity of the disease.
