Management of high-flow arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the oral
and maxillofacial region is one of the greatest challenges facing
oral and maxillofacial surgeons and should be patient-specific in
almost all cases. AVMs are usually noted at birth, and the size of
lesions increases proportionately as the child grows. It may cause
asymmetry, pain, functional disability, cosmetic deformity, or life-
threatening hemorrhage. Management of AVMs in the maxillofacial
region is complex and has a high rate of recurrence. Sclerotherapy,
radiotherapy, surgical resection and superselective intra-arterial
embolization have been used, but the lesions originating from the
auricle require special consideration during the selection of
treatment. Here the authors present a case of auricular arteriovenous
malformation which was treated successfully with surgical resection. |
