The neoplasm arising from the retropharyngeal space is quite rare, because of few anatomical structures in the space. More than 25% of schwannomas are found in the head and neck region, and they are rarely found in the retropharyngeal space. Herein, we report a rare case of schwannoma arising in the retropharyngeal space. A 45-year-old man had with the mass confined to the right retropharyngeal space. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) showed 4.2x2.4x2.1cm sized well-defined mass in the retropharyngeal space with bright signal intensity on T2-weighted images and low signal intensity on T1-weighted images. The patient underwent trans-oral resection under the direct vision without the need for skin incision. The pathology was reported as schwannoma. The postoperative course was uneventful and there was no evidence of recurrence after 6 months follow-up.
