IMPLANTABLE SOLUTIONS FOR CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA
Izmir Bozyaka Teaching & Research Hospital ENT Clinic, Turkey
Levent Olgun MD
Hearing loss due to different types of chronic otitis media can be restored by different ossiculoplasty techniques. However either an inadequate cochlear reserve or surgeries in which a satisfactory hearing restoration can not be achieved necessitates any kind of hearing rehabilitation.Air-conduction hearing aids have acoustical limitations and may be l problematic especially if the patient has a cavity or a draining-prone ear .Bone conducting devices are difficult to wear devices and compliances are very low. Bone-anchored hearing aids seems to be a viable option in selected chronic otitis media cases.Currently percutaneous and transcutaneous active and transcutaneous types of bone anchored hearing aids are on market.Another option may be devices wearing on teeth. However if the patient has a mixed hearing loss these devices may not be beneficial.Active middle ear implants which enhances acoustic stimuli either in a magnetic field or by using piezo-electric crystalls may be surgically implanted in chronic otitis media cases.Surgery may be complex and should be tailored according to the situation of ear. If the hearing loss is severe to profound in any chronic ear case hearing restoration may only be possible with a cochlear implant.Majority of the cases necessitates a modified cochlear implant technique. In this presentation experience on various implantable hearing devices in which used in different chronic otitis media cases would be shared with short video-clips by stressing indications, problems and limitations and an algorithma on ¡° Implantable Solutions for Chronic Otitis media ¡°would be presented.
